It’s interesting that in so many self-help books, the authors describe how dissatisfied they were with their careers, surroundings, and lives before they made a change? Well, I am afraid I don’t have such a story to share simply because I was satisfied with my job and life at the time. I had a decent routine, a decent income, a decent lifestyle. But did you notice what I just repeated, not once but three times? Decent!
I just knew I could achieve more.
I know what you’re going to ask next: how did you know? We all have dreams and passions from a young age. I’m not talking about far-fetched descriptions of dream houses with fountains and artificial waterfalls (yes, some of us were pretty imaginative as kids!) but about the spark we all possess: for some of us it means writing a book and leave our footprint behind, for others, it is to learn a foreign language or enrol on a cooking class!
That’s what happened to me: when I reached my 40s, I realised that this is how my life is going to be from now on: decent. But is this what I really wanted? Does it mean I will never be able to write a book, start studying about human behaviour, have my own business?
Well, guess what. Within the next two years, I began reading more self-help books, watching motivational videos and then the lockdown happened and it was then when it struck me: I have to stop being passive about all these things and make a change! Sure reading books, watching videos, attending online events was useful. But I needed to take action!
During this time, I committed to writing my book for between one and two hours per day. I stopped going out every single weekend and partying for no reason and, with the money I saved, I enrolled on a life coaching course. Soon after, I took the plunge and quit my job, despite my friends’ passionate warnings against such a decision! Despite my reluctance, I began my own teaching business.
Was it hard? A bit, but the hard part had mostly to do with changing my mindset and not the actual process of doing these things. Once my mindset had shifted, I was on auto-pilot mode.
And the best thing: I did this from the comfort of my home, without having to leave my physical comfort zone. If you are one of these people who does not want to travel, move to a new location, or generally change your physical location, the power of the internet could assist you. There are countless university courses, TED talks, and YouTube videos available. It’s easier to fall into the never-ending trap of consuming information without taking action, and this is often procrastination in disguise!
That’s where I come in. As a certified coach, I can help you find your true passion, clarify your priorities and set goals. Also, a coach can uncover limiting beliefs and roadblocks that are stopping you, help you shift your mindset, and design an action plan with you, ensuring that you actually follow it.
